This is what we did today.
We dug this bed under this cute little tunnel frame for the garden.  Yesterday we planted a spring garden with kale, chard, radishes, carrots, sugar snaps, and corn flowers.  This summer bed will get planted with runner beans, zuchs, cukes, a pumpkin, and a passion flower.  Tomatoes and peppers will go in the spring garden as its fading out.  The garlic gets harvested in June.
Digging garden beds in clay is really hard work.
Hauling out all the weeds, roots, and wire grass by hand is a challenge as well.
I dug and planted this bed of comfrey on Saturday.  Its much more casual, as comfrey is basically unstoppable and needs no silly coddling nor fluffy special soils.  A farmer in Mendocino California sent me a whole box of the roots.  Pretty cool!  I can't wait to see it come up and fill in.  It makes great salve and fodder for cows.

Your post almost made me weep! I can smell the warm earth smell from here. We got another foot of snow last night and I shoveled for an hour and a half this morning. Plant some sunflowers for me...

Oh, and can you explain your cool garden enclosure? Is that something you just know how to do or is there a book or something you recommend? We have a lot of stray cats and dogs in my neighborhood, not to mention deer and rabbits, that would make something like that really useful.

Oh Candy, a foot of snow?! My kids would trade with yours right this minute!

The main garden fence is hog wire and T posts. Not too expensive, when you consider they are infinitely movable and last forever. There are some cedar posts thrown in the mix because we had them. And the arches come from two cattle panels and six T posts. Fun! But wow, the main fence around the roses and blue berries is butt-ugly. I can't wait till they are big enough to be deer proof and we can take a lot of it down.

Oh, and I dig a trench to lay a log in along the sides. It helps hold the grass and weeds back.

Spring come so early where you are. Candy and I and Toronto, Canada are on the same latitude, lol.

You inspire us.

Hug those kids. love, Val

Only spring plants. No worries, you have plenty of time.
