July 4, 2010

This may have been the nicest most low key Fourth I've ever had.  We decided to celebrate from home, this year, just us.  You can think of it as an Oil Free Fourth, if you like.  We grilled local pork over a backyard fire and wrapped that in homemade bread.  Riley roasted the first red tomatoes from our garden.  She covered them in olive oil, pepper, and salt.  That was dinner divine.  We had some obligatory ice cream - I taught Ry how to make caramel sauce.  We watched American Legends because the adults in our family still love these clips.  This led to some online research about Johnny Appleseed.  He planted Rambo apples, in case you're wondering.  The Rambo pictured in the link was planted by the man, himself.  He would be 225 years old, or there abouts, this Fourth.  After spending some TV time with a few of our national heroes (where are our current heroes?)  We all went back outside.  The roses and blueberries got a nice deep watering.  We turned over a patch in the herb garden and planted lovely blue Bachelor's Buttons, hoping for a fall bloom.  The chickens helped turn and sift the soil.  After they went to bed in their coop, the seeds were planted in soft waning light and Henry offered a sparkler benediction over the baby flowers.  Fireworks were exploded.  I spent some time knitting a soft lace alpaca project as the children rounded the house several times, chased by their father, all sparks and love everywhere, laughter floating in the open windows.  Really, its been a sublime evening.  Happy Fourth of July, ya'll!

our fourth was lovely too - the weather has been perfect. maybe somewhere in us we want the dream of family, place, freedom and commnity to live. my father just wrote. the new dollar does not have "In God We Trust" on it. I can see their point, but I am also traditional and humble enough (just barely) to know that humans can really mess it up so, if a divine power can help us along, let's allow for that. thx for the lovely picture of family-ness. yumm.

my dad will not be accepting any of the new dollar coins in protest. he invites us all to do the same. I think of our mutual friends over there in Orange Grove.

there is no new dollar being minted without "In God we Trust".
