We watched a program tonight about a school of 6 thousand elementary kids who have vowed to become a trash free campus.   They are down to one half a bag of trash per day.  That's right.  The entire school of 6 thousand kids produces one half a garbage bag of trash a day.  Before the project began, they created about 40 bags a day.

Their story was so inspiring we have decided to track our garbage.  Currently, our family fills about one 13 gallon garbage bag of trash a week.  Maybe two?  I've never paid much attention.  We can easily go a day without trash because we milk the cow into recycled bottles and cook almost all our food from scratch.  We don't have much packaging day to day.

So having a trash free day isn't much of a goal for us.  I suggested we track how many trash free days we can go.  Maybe we can inspire other families to join in our  project.  Maybe we can find ways to generate less trash.  We're open to suggestions.  And if anyone wants to join in this project leave a comment.  We can link blogs and track our trash together.  The kids wisely pointed out that we will need to scour our house before we start.  Hitting the trash reset button will be a fringe benefit.

That sounds like a great project! I have struggled with my plastic trash for a couple months now, and I would love to be trash free.

Oh yay! I love company for these kinds of projects - moral support! If a school of 6000 kids can function trash free, we should be able to do it at home. Right? :o)

I do not know what we can promise, but moral support for sure, and co-learning too. So, we're eager to hear your journey and follow your lead. Lead on!

Well, we don't seem to be leading anyone anywhere. But we are reducing our trash. We are paying attention. :o)
