Sir Ken Robinson Showreel 2

Can I yell this any louder? "You are turning away kids with university degrees aren't you? Because they haven't got what you are looking for... They don't know how to think creatively, they can't communicate, they don't work together in teams."

You know what part really hit me over the head?? When he says "You've never really found out what you're capable, who you could be, the things you might have been...because no one was looking for it..."

The whole enchilada, people, is what humans are about. Not parts. But the whole.

Me too, Maria. When he speaks, his ideas carry like the sound of a bell for me. That he champions a fresh way to think about education AND creativity? Ah, I swoon a bit at the sound of his voice now.

I love the analogy between the earth's resources that are exploited and human resources being treated the same way. I've followed links to him before in other lectures and have always been inspired by him.

Katherine, your last two posts make such a cool combo. This one defines the problem in modern education well, the last one shows a possible solution.

I like that analogy too. And I like that he is clear that higher education is valuable. But its only one facet of educating a person. For my family, I believe unschooling them when they are little in common sense, creative thinking, cohesion as a family and community, and ideas (vaguely here) of "right" living will preclude institutional school. They can go in 10th grade. Certainly to college. What the hell can't be taught in 4 years? WHAT? God, it makes me mad thinking about it. Oh, I could work up a rant .....
