When I was little, my Great Aunt Katherine decorated match boxes with me. I have one left that she actually made. Its the angel up there on the red back ground with the gold border. Two have survived, low these 30ish long years, that I made with her. The puppy there with the tin-foil bone. And the pair of plastic sledders sliding down a cotton ball snow bank. Hey, my life is now real vintage. Wow. What a strange feeling. These original boxes were made as presents for beloved family members who smoked, made to actually hold matches. But I had the idea, a couple of years ago, to make 24 of these for my kids. We use them as an advent calendar. Every year I fill each box with two tiny treats. The kids get to pick one box a day through December until Christmas. The season is almost upon us, people. Maybe this year the kids might like to decorate their own. Hold it....that would make me....an adult helping kids to decorate match boxes....just like Aunt Katherine....um....I am getting older. How marvelous.

Those are beautiful. I knew a man who made a box, filled with boxes, all out of matchsticks. He did it in Iceland, during WWII, while he was stationed there. It was a work of art. These reminded me of this piece.

This is a beautiful thing in so many ways. Every year the kids and I make an ornament...this way when they grow up they will have an ornament for each year of their lives that is special to them. I will post when we do ours this year...I haven't decided on this year's design.

My aunt Katherine used to make me sit quietly "like a lady". Yours sounds like more fun. She thinks I named my daughter after her, but I DIDN'T.

We used to make advent calendars every year. And all the treats were usually gone by the 5th of the month. It's because we have no self control. I freely admit it.

It's wonderful that you can share this tradition with your children. Hopefully they will pass down, too.
