I called Heifer a couple of years ago. I can't remember the exact number they gave me but it was impressive. Was it 91%? I think so. 91% of all money donated goes directly to the target families. That extra 9% is used to run the company. This is a first rate organisation helping families and communities all over the world, not only with food but with an education of sustainability. To receive from Heifer you must also vow to pass the education, and some of the baby animals eventually born, on to your neighbors. Thus, not just one family gets goats (or bees or cows or llamas or rabbits or chickens) or what ever animal will serve the local ecology while producing food. The bigger community benefits. I am hoping to one day convince Heifer to start a volunteer program of high school age homeschool students. Kind of an AFS with deeper meaning. Going off to donate now. See ya!

Heifer already has many volunteer opportunities, with study tours, etc. Not sure if any are geared solely to homeschoolers, altho the site in Massachusetts(I think it's this one) has a homeschool mom running the accounting dept, and her sons have been heavily involved for years. She's on one of the homeschool lists I subscribe to.
Have you done their Read to Feed program? My mom just sponsored all the kids in her tutoring center, and a lot of them are finding other sponsors too - it's a great way to donate to them.
