Today while I was at work the children had a visitor.
The story of The Black Rat Snake,
in their own words:
Henry heard a noise, stepped outside, and said, "the birds are going mad." So we went looking to see why they were upset and Riley said, "I see a snake." Then we all looked at it for a long time. Then Dad went to get our camera and he took these pictures. Then Dad tried to get it down with a stick. It didn't work so we went off for a walk in the woods. When we came back the snake was still there. After 13 tries with a forked stick Dad finally managed to get the snake down. Dad tried to pick the snake up for us to hold but it got a way. It slithered up our drain spout so we tried to get it out with a hose. It didn't work. After a little while we went inside to get a drink of water. When we came back out, no sign of the snake. And that's about it.

Hey, we have a black racer, too. His name is Slim Jim. He lives in a hole in the wall of our driveway, and occasionally comes out to jump(almost fly) thru our shrubs. It's a bit scary to walk down the sidewalk and have a snake literally soar from one bush to another right in front of you.

Oops, it turns out we had a black rat snake. They must be similar. I'm going to correct this on the op. Sorry.
That's a big, black rat snake. Great pictures.
